vlc mediaplayer多媒體播放器（最初命名為videolan用戶端）是videolan計畫的多媒體播放器。它支援眾多音頻與視頻解碼器及檔案格式，並支援dvd影碟，vcd影碟及各類串流協定。它亦能作為unicast或multicast的串流伺服器在ipv4 或ipv6的高速網路連線下使用。它融合了ffmpeg計畫的解碼器與libdvdcss程式庫使其有播放多媒體檔案及加密dvd影碟的功能。它可以播放 mpeg-1、mpeg-2、mpeg-4、divx、dvd/vcd、數字衛星頻道、數字地球電視頻道(digitalterrestial television channels)、在許多作業平台底下透過寬頻 ipv4、ipv6網絡播放線上影片；此軟件開發項目是由法國學生所發起的，參與者來自於世界各地，設計了多平台的支持，可以用於播放網絡串流及本機多媒體檔案之播放。

vlc多媒體播放器具有跨平臺的特性，它有linux、microsoft windows、mac os x、beos、bsd、pocketpc及solaris的版本。與另一個著名播放器mplayer（使用gtk+庫）不同，vlc使用qt庫來編寫linux的用戶介面。在windows，linux及某些平臺，vlc提供了一個mozilla插件，使得某些網站上捆綁的quicktime及windowsmedia多媒體檔案可以在不使用微軟或蘋果電腦產品下於mozilla的流覽器中正常顯示。由版本0.8.2開始，vlc亦提供了一個activex插件，使得用戶可以在internet explorer下，正常顯示某些網站上捆綁的quicktime及windowsmedia多媒體檔案可以在不使用微軟或蘋果電腦產品。
